According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics, 1.2 million U.S. women 40-plus are raising a child under 10. This number has been climbing steadily for the past three decades, and the trend seems likely to continue.
Apparently this is happening in the big cities. First-time mothers in larger, coastal cities such as New York and San Francisco are nearly a decade older than their counterparts in rural areas and the South.
Challenges
- We are majorly tired and possibly suffer from sleep deprivation. It’s highly unlikely for a 40 year old to have more energy than a toddler.
- The new norms of parenting - we struggle with the new norms
- Cursing is not something you get your mouth washed out for anymore.
- What about all the music - It’s hard to listen to a song that doesn’t have curse words. Even Beyonce’s music is no longer kid friendly.
- We struggle with the stigma that goes with it, especially if you live in an area where women become mothers in their 20’s.
Benefits
- Older mom have developed the ability to trust their judgment and have confidence in their choices.
- Have advanced degrees and are more established in there career and have more money!. They are more financially stable.
There isn’t one right path to motherhood. We are all better and worse prepared in different ways. No matter where we start out as mothers, ultimately we all want the same thing for our children: the best possible life.
